Coinbase CEO: AI agents will drive crypto adoption
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong argues that artificial intelligence will not replace cryptocurrency but instead increase demand for crypto-native payment rails. On X, Armstrong framed "agentic finance" (AiFi) as the convergence of AI agents and programmable money, calling out Coinbase’s Base network, the x402 payment protocol and USDC as core infrastructure for automated, machine-to-machine transactions. "AI being a megatrend takes nothing away from crypto," he wrote, adding: "If anything, it makes crypto more important."
How Coinbase built its agentic finance stack
Armstrong’s AiFi vision envisions autonomous software agents making payments, subscribing to APIs, and purchasing data or services without human intervention. Coinbase’s approach layers three main components:
- Base: Launched in 2023 as an Ethereum layer-2, Base was designed to lower costs and speed up onchain applications. While not originally built exclusively for AI payments, its general-purpose blockchain architecture makes it suitable for automated transactions.
- x402 protocol: Introduced by Coinbase as a payments standard based on HTTP’s "402 Payment Required", x402 enables automated stablecoin payments between software systems. This protocol removes the need for traditional accounts and manual checkout flows when an AI agent needs to buy digital resources.
- USDC: The dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle and the Centre Consortium (which Coinbase helped form) is a common settlement asset for x402 payments, allowing secure, programmable transfers in USD value.
Why programmable money matters for AI
AI agents that access APIs, data feeds and digital services require predictable, automatable value transfer. Traditional banking rails with manual reconciliation and KYC-heavy onboarding are poorly suited to microtransactions executed autonomously. Tokenized, programmable stablecoins like USDC on fast layer-2 networks let agents transact in real time, enabling new business models for metered services, real-time data purchases and subscription models executed without human oversight.
Base agentic activity tops 100 million transactions
Analytics platform Chainalysis reported that agentic payments on Base conducted via the x402 protocol surpassed 100 million transactions within roughly nine months of activity, indicating strong early demand for automated, onchain payments. The firm said it tracked identifiable x402 payment flows onchain and found that transactions worth at least $1 made up 95% of the total value moved.
Chainalysis also observed that wallets associated with agentic payments tended to be newer, held a wider variety of assets, and generally carried smaller balances compared with the average Base user—signals consistent with utility-focused, machine-controlled wallets rather than long-term holders.
Implications for crypto infrastructure and Coinbase’s outlook
The rise of agentic payments positions blockchains as a viable payments layer for autonomous systems, potentially unlocking fresh demand for onchain settlement, programmable stablecoins and low-cost layer-2 networks. Coinbase plans to report second-quarter earnings this week; analysts polled by Yahoo Finance expect revenue near $1.29 billion and modest year-over-year declines, reflecting broader market conditions even as new product adoption—like AiFi flows—could shape long-term growth.
As developers and enterprises experiment with agentic use cases, industry observers will watch onchain metrics and protocol adoption closely. If AI agents continue to prefer programmable money, networks and protocols that enable fast, permissionless, automated payments—Base, x402 and USDC among them—may become foundational components of a machine-driven digital economy.
