TikTok has officially rolled out Footnotes, its innovative crowdsourced fact-checking feature, to users in the United States. Footnotes leverages a unique consensus-based algorithm—often referred to as a bridging algorithm—designed to surface content that reflects a balanced perspective. When users with differing viewpoints agree that a note is helpful, the likelihood of its accuracy is considered higher. This approach helps curb manipulative behaviors such as brigading, where groups attempt to sway fact-checking outcomes.
All US-based TikTok users can now view notes that have been judged as helpful by the community and also participate by submitting their own ratings. This fosters an environment of accountability, giving viewers the tools to critically assess the context of trending videos and viral claims.
Applying to Become a Contributor
Since announcing the Footnotes pilot in April, TikTok has allowed eligible users—those over 18, with accounts active for at least six months and a clean record regarding Community Standards—to apply as contributors.
