1983 AMG 300 GD: An Unmatched Blend of Luxury and Utility

Among the highlights in the museum’s 'Totally Awesome' installation—celebrating the spirit of 1980s and 1990s car culture—is this extraordinary 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300 GD. Owned by the passionate Mercedes collectors at Florida’s Patina Collective, this particular G-Wagon is one of the select few custom-built SUVs, originally coveted by affluent buyers in the Middle East. However, the story of this specific vehicle stands out for its unique journey and famous first owner.

A Custom G-Wagon for Tennis Legend Ivan Lendl

Unlike most G-Wagons that made their way from Dubai or other luxury markets, this AMG 300 GD was commissioned by tennis Grand Slam champion Ivan Lendl. During the 1980s, Lendl was sponsored by Mercedes and while touring the factory, he was drawn to the rugged two-door convertible G-Class. Wishing for a more refined appearance, Lendl requested if the utilitarian SUV could bear the sophisticated face of a standard Mercedes sedan.

 

Working with AMG, his 300 GD was transformed with a front grille and headlamps from the W116 S-Class, complemented by AMG-exclusive bumpers, a body kit, BBS alloy wheels, and bespoke blue leather Recaro seats. Finished in a distinctive custom paint, this G-Wagon perfectly combined AMG styling with Mercedes luxury—even displaying Lendl’s name on its VIN plate.

Vehicle Specs and Performance

Though visually imposing, the original AMG 300 GD was engineered more for exclusivity than outright speed. Under the hood remains the dependable 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine, delivering just 87 horsepower (88 PS) and 127 lb-ft (172 Nm) of torque. Compared to today’s thunderous V8-powered AMG G63 models, acceleration was modest; the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint took nearly 25 seconds. 

 

Market Rarity and Legacy

Lendl treasured the G-Wagon for a decade, bringing it to Connecticut when he moved. Back in the 1980s, spotting a G-Wagon in America was uncommon, since these vehicles were not part of the official US Mercedes lineup. But the AMG body enhancements and exclusive pedigree made this SUV truly one-of-a-kind.
