Musk recently told reporters that Optimus 3 is in its final development stages and, by his account, will outclass every humanoid competitor on the market. He went further, arguing that the public demonstrations we've seen from other teams don't measure up to what Tesla claims its next-generation robot can do.
He laid out a blunt timetable: small-scale production starts this summer, with a push toward mass manufacturing the following summer. Tesla plans to move from limited runs to full-scale production within roughly a year.

Beyond the immediate rollout, Musk says Tesla is already sketching Optimus 4. Design work should wrap up by next year, and the company intends to ship updated versions annually—an approach borrowed from the consumer electronics cycle where yearly refreshes are the norm.
Optimus first surfaced in 2021 and has appeared in several proof-of-concept demos since then. Tesla has long described a roadmap where robots begin as internal factory labor, then graduate to commercial and consumer markets. Yet some of the timelines and capability promises from earlier briefings have lagged behind reality, raising familiar questions about delivery and scope.
Will Tesla meet these deadlines and shift the robotics landscape, or are we witnessing another round of ambitious timelines and incremental progress? Either way, the company is making a bold bet that humanoid automation will be central to its next chapter.
