New Resident Evil Image: Zack Krieger Promises Bold Reboot

One frame, and expectations tilt. A freshly released image from the upcoming Resident Evil film has already started conversations — and the director himself wants you to know this isn’t a straight retread of the games.

Director Zack Krieger — riding the buzz after films like Barbarian and Weapons — told Empire that his take is less adaptation, more personal imprint. This is essentially a Zack Krieger film set in the Resident Evil universe.

At the center is Brian, played by Austin Abrams: a low-profile medical courier who knows nothing about fighting or survival, and yet finds himself shoved into a mission that quickly spins out of control. Krieger even likens Brian to Frodo — not a warrior, but someone burdened with a purpose he never asked for.

The filmmaker promises a different tempo this time. Gone is the slow-burn dread; instead the movie aims for a relentless, almost game-like rhythm where the hero is propelled from one peril to the next. If the director’s description holds, each location will feel like a new level — claustrophobic, inventive, unforgiving.

For longtime Resident Evil fans this could be a welcome gamble: familiar motifs reframed through Krieger’s sensibilities rather than a slavish recreation of the source material. For horror audiences hungry for kinetic scares, it sounds like a ride designed to keep hearts racing.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026 (27 Shahrivar 1405). Expect more images and a trailer to follow — and brace yourself: this one’s being pitched as less a remake and more a reinvention.
