Christopher Nolan has a new summit. The Odyssey sailed past the $1.1 billion mark worldwide in just four weeks, and Universal has confirmed it now stands as the director's highest-grossing film.

It didn't climb quietly. The Odyssey overtook The Dark Knight Rises, the 2012 behemoth that earned $1.085 billion, and pushed Nolan's career total beyond the $7 billion threshold — a milestone few modern directors approach.

Numbers tell the story: $461.1 million came from North America, while international markets contributed $643.6 million. Those markets, together, turned a bold adaptation of Homer into a global box office phenomenon.

Universal confirms: The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing film to date.

The film also carved out new ground among R-rated releases. It is now the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, trailing only Deadpool & Wolverine, which amassed $636.7 million domestically and $1.33 billion worldwide. In 2026, The Odyssey leads R-rated charts both in North America and globally. Along the way it set new personal bests for stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson.

Still, the year’s leaderboard remains competitive. Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day keeps the top spot for 2026 with more than $1.26 billion. Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 follows closely with $1.09 billion, slotting in behind The Odyssey in the annual rankings.

Records are being rewritten and prizes handed out. But beyond trophies and ticket sales, The Odyssey's run raises a simple question: how much higher can a tentpole climb when craftsmanship, star power, and global appetite line up perfectly?
