Phosgo Go5 Solar E-Bike: 200 W Solar, Limits Revealed

Phosgo has introduced the Go5, an electric bicycle that integrates 200 W of solar panels into its wheel rims to supplement battery charging. Solar system and charging performance

The Go5’s wheel-mounted solar array is rated at a total of 200 W and uses an MPPT controller to route converted energy to the battery or motor. The panels are arranged across both sides of both wheels, with about 50 W of panel capacity per wheel side. That layout means only portions of the array will be illuminated at any one time, and in some sun angles the conversion rate can be negligible.

Phosgo states the system can deliver power while the bike is in motion; in that mode the panels are reported to feed the motor directly to reduce battery draw rather than charging the battery first. Independent footage shared with the report showed roughly a 20% battery recharge over four hours of direct sun, a rate the author described as modest. The panels are potentially valuable for extended rides away from mains charging, but they are also exposed to damage on rough routes and the wheel design can increase sensitivity to sidewinds, which may affect stability.

Powertrain and claimed range

The Go5 carries an LG 720 Wh battery integrated into the downtube. Phosgo claims a maximum range of 140 miles (225 km) on a full charge under sunny conditions, which the company says is nearly double typical market offerings. The drive unit is a Bafang M430 mid-drive motor rated at 750 W nominal and 150 Nm (111 lb-ft) of torque.

Phosgo offers the Go5 in Pro and Ultra variants. The Ultra adds electronic shifting, higher torque than the Pro, and commands a higher price. Core equipment and features include:
