2028 Volkswagen Taos Prototype Spied Ahead of Launch

Spy photographers have captured a camouflaged prototype of the second-generation Volkswagen Taos, suggesting an evolutionary redesign ahead of a planned 2028 model year launch in North America. The images are the first public look at the next Taos and reveal styling cues and packaging changes beneath a distinctive camouflage wrap.

Context within Volkswagen's recent activity

The appearance of the Taos prototype arrives while the Volkswagen brand continues to roll out updates across its lineup. Several high-profile models including the Atlas, Tiguan, Golf GTI and Golf R, and the all-electric ID. Buzz have been upgraded to include AirConsole in-vehicle gaming services, which Volkswagen says offers about 20 games, including Tetris, playable on the infotainment display while the vehicle is parked. At the same time Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles recently introduced the ID. Buzz Cargo LWB, a long-wheelbase cargo variant with increased storage capacity and an optional powertrain rated at 335 hp with 4Motion all-wheel drive.

The Taos itself was first launched in late 2018 as the Volkswagen Tharu in China; the Taos nameplate followed as a restyled version for North America, South America and Russia. The model is not part of Volkswagen's lineup in its European home markets. Volkswagen gave the Taos a mid-cycle refresh for the 2025 model year in North America that added a new front face, revised lighting, a larger infotainment screen and an upgraded 1.5 L turbocharged engine.

What the prototype shows

The prototype's camouflage permits several readable cues that point to an evolutionary update rather than a radical rethink. At the front the Taos appears to wear a flatter nose, slimmer LED headlights and a light strip that links the daytime running lights to a VW badge that could be illuminated. The lower grille looks taller than on the current car. The side profile looks largely familiar, though the vehicle may have grown slightly in size. At the rear the prototype shows slimmer LED taillights connected by a light bar and a centrally placed VW emblem that, according to the images, could be illuminated in red.

These observations are based on visual details visible through the camouflage; Volkswagen has not published technical specifications or confirmed styling elements for the production second-generation Taos. The expected timing given in the images and reporting points to a 2028 model year introduction in North America.

Alongside the real-world spy shots, Brazil-based virtual artist Kleber Silva, who posts as KDesign AG, produced a CGI rendering that imagines the next Taos eTSI. That digital interpretation follows the cues visible on the prototype but is a creative visualization rather than an official Volkswagen image.
