Crunchyroll just added a new samurai tale to its future lineup: Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will stream exclusively in 2028. The project surfaced at New York Comic Con 2026, and the reveal came with a roll call of creators that reads like a wish list for fans of cinematic anime and myth-driven action.

Rather than adapting the single-player drama of the original game, the anime draws from Legends — the co-op, myth-tinged mode that sent players into supernatural battles inspired by Japanese folklore. Think yokai and ancient curses colliding with razor-sharp katana duels. The goal is not to recreate the game beat-for-beat but to expand its mythic atmosphere into a distinctly anime visual language.

The director attached is Takanobu Mizuno, who earned attention directing The Duel for Star Wars: Visions. Animation production sits with Kamikaze Douga, a studio known for stylized, kinetic work. On the writing front, the series benefits from Gen Urobuchi’s famously dark imagination paired with Satoshi Maejima on story structure and scripts. Takashi Okazaki, whose character design sensibility is rooted in bold silhouettes and period flair, will shape how these samurai and spirits look on screen.

Voice casting is beginning to take shape, too. Mayumi Sako and Shinya Fukumatsu were announced among the performers; Sako previously voiced Tomoe in the original game, and Fukumatsu is no stranger to memorable anime roles. Whether they reprise familiar characters or step into entirely new parts, their involvement hints at a deliberate bridge between the game’s world and this new animated retelling.

Music and sound can make or break an adaptation, and the team recognizes that. Composer Keiji Inai joins the production, supported by sound director Yoshikazu Iwanami and sound effects designer Yasumasa Koyama. Even the title’s calligraphy will be by Gyoshu Suzuki, signaling attention to aesthetics down to the smallest detail. Production credits list HAYATE with Aniplex and PlayStation Productions, and Sony Music is on board as the music partner.

The series was originally planned for 2027 but has been pushed to 2028. Episode count, story scope, and a precise release date remain under wraps. That mystery might be frustrating for eager fans, but it also leaves room for the creators to polish a version of Legends that feels cinematic rather than rushed.

Why does this adaptation matter? Because Legends is where Ghost of Tsushima’s creators let loose with folklore — and anime, more than any other medium, can magnify those haunting images. With this lineup of talent, the series is positioned to be more than a tie-in; it could become a standalone myth that brings a new vantage point to the samurai saga.

The only confirmed detail so far: Crunchyroll will stream Ghost of Tsushima: Legends in 2028.

Curious how the supernatural elements will be staged, or which characters from the game will return? Keep an eye on official channels — and prepare for a samurai story that wants to be seen as much as it wants to be felt.
