MG4 EV Unveils Striking Donglai Purple Exterior
SAIC Motor has officially introduced an eye-catching new hue for the MG4 electric hatchback, debuting the exclusive "Donglai Purple" edition to the Chinese market. The name “Donglai” is inspired by the phrase "coming from the East," with the paint finish engineered to reveal a metallic sheen under sunlight and a unique pearlescent glow at contrasting angles—perfect for car enthusiasts looking for standout style.
Pre-Sales and Launch Timeline
The updated MG4 EV will open for pre-orders in China starting August 5, and customers can expect the first deliveries to begin on September 5. This new color variant further enriches the attractive MG4 lineup, promising a blend of performance and design.
Vehicle Specifications: Compact Yet Powerful
The latest MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, ensuring optimal interior space for a compact electric hatchback. Built on SAIC's advanced Nebula EV architecture, it features a rear-mounted 120 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor and utilizes a robust lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from Rept Battery Energy. The MG4 can achieve speeds of up to 160 km/h, emphasizing balanced electric vehicle performance. However, details on driving range and battery capacity are yet to be announced, adding to anticipation.

Next-Generation Cockpit: Oppo Collaboration and Advanced UI
Inside, MG debuts an innovative cockpit system co-developed with Oppo, elevating the in-car tech experience. Highlights include smartphone mirroring, hands-free voice controls, and gesture-based navigation for seamless interaction. The system is compatible with Oppo, Huawei, and Apple devices, enabling app updates directly from smartphones without the hassle of separate in-car downloads.
Refined Design and Future-Ready Battery Tech
On the exterior, design enhancements feature a sleek closed front grille, distinctive arrow-style LED taillights, and a full-width light bar, while maintaining classic door handles and stylish 17-inch alloy wheels. The charging port remains conveniently located on the front left. Looking ahead, MG brand director Chen Cui has hinted at the potential adoption of semi-solid-state batteries in forthcoming MG4 models, though this remains unconfirmed for the current release.
Performance Abroad and Market Positioning
Despite modest sales in China—with just 13 units sold in February 2025—the MG4 EV continues to thrive internationally. In the first quarter of 2025, MG Motor Europe logged an impressive 78,505 vehicle registrations, marking a 33.5% increase year-over-year, with the MG4 playing a significant role in this success. In the UK, MG has reported over 24,600 MG4 registrations for Q1 alone, and global sales have topped 40,000 units since launch.

Ambitious Global Expansion Plans
MG is committed to furthering its global electrification strategy, with plans to launch 13 new electrified models worldwide by 2027—supported by a substantial 100 billion yuan (approximately $14 billion USD) investment. The MG4 EV stands as a cornerstone in MG's global portfolio, setting new benchmarks for electric hatchbacks in design, technology, and performance.
