Writer of It: Welcome to Derry Joins New Transformers

When a blockbuster franchise needs a recharge, the studio often answers with fresh voices. Jason Fuchs — the writer behind It: Welcome to Derry and a string of high-profile projects — has been tapped to draft an untitled new entry in the Transformers universe for Paramount and Hasbro.

Transformers is no small gamble. Across films and merchandise the franchise has generated roughly $5 billion, yet it’s been searching for a consistent creative heartbeat since the Michael Bay era. Bay’s movies smashed box-office records even as critics rolled their eyes. Interest dipped after Transformers: The Last Knight in 2017, and while films like Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts and Transformers One earned warmer reviews, each release has struggled to recapture that original momentum.

The Wrap first reported the hire, though story details remain tightly under wraps. How this untitled script will slot into Paramount’s broader plans is unclear. Will it reboot the mythology? Slide into an existing continuity? Or carve out a side-road tale inside an expanding cinematic playground? For now, it’s anyone’s guess.

On the production side, the project lists heavy hitters: Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto and Don Murphy. Steven Spielberg and Hasbro Entertainment are attached as executive producers, lending both prestige and corporate muscle. Multiple Transformers projects are being developed at once, so plans are fluid and creative directions are deliberately varied.

Paramount hasn’t put all its eggs in one basket. Drake Conley — known for Jurassic World — is reportedly scripting a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover, and industry whispers even suggest Michael Bay could return to helm another action-packed clash between Autobots and Decepticons. The studio appears intent on exploring several tonal and narrative paths simultaneously.

Fuchs himself arrives with varied credits: he’s working on Netflix’s live-action My Hero Academia adaptation and has written for features including It and Argylle. Less widely known is his earlier Lobo screenplay, a project once linked to Michael Bay. That mix of comic-tinged material and genre experience makes him a curious, and intriguing, fit for a franchise that needs both spectacle and smarter storytelling.

So what should fans expect? A safer retread or a bold new take? The only certainty is that Transformers will keep shifting gears — on screen and in the boardroom. Keep your optics tuned; the next transmission could change everything.
