Vin Diesel has ignited a fresh wave of excitement for the Fast & Furious franchise — and he did it with a single social post. The actor quietly confirmed that pre-production on the eleventh installment, officially titled Fast Forever, is underway, and he teased one of the series’ favorite rituals: picking the cars.
Cars first. Stories next. Diesel, who shared a behind-the-scenes image on his social channels, called vehicle selection “one of the most fun parts” of early prep. Fans immediately filled the replies with dream builds and wish lists. It’s what this series does best: turn steel into spectacle and turn spectacle into family drama.
Behind the scenes, Michael Lesslie is credited as the screenwriter, and Louis Leterrier — who helmed Fast X — is set to return to the director’s chair. Producers on the project include familiar franchise names: Neil H. Moritz, Vin Diesel himself, Dwayne Johnson, Jeff Kirschenbaum, Joe Roth, and Samantha Vincent. The creative team reads like a who’s who of modern blockbusters.
Fast Forever will be the final film in the main Fast & Furious storyline. That doesn’t mean the cinematic universe is closing shop. Studios are already planning spin-offs — think Hobbs & Shaw — and at least one TV project is reportedly in development to stretch this world into new formats.

There’s an emotional current running through this chapter. Diesel revealed the screenplay’s long gestation: four writers over four years, exhaustive rewrites and collaboration aimed at delivering a proper send-off. When he read the finished draft, he said, he was moved to tears. He described the experience as the result of “years of work and partnership” poured into a script meant to honor the franchise and its fans.
Not every piece is locked. According to Polygon, Leterrier hadn’t seen the latest draft at the time of that report — which speaks to a production still finding its final shape even as pre-production starts. Diesel had hoped for principal photography to begin by the end of 2026; the start of prep suggests that schedule might still be achievable.
Series veteran Jordana Brewster weighed in on the expansion to television, praising the world-building seen in Taylor Sheridan’s projects and saying the Fast universe could adapt a similar approach for long-form storytelling. The idea of branching out feels inevitable: when a franchise becomes cultural gravity, new orbits appear.
Mark your calendars. Fast Forever is slated for a wide release on March 17, 2028. Whether you’re here for the cars, the characters, or the combustible mix of both, the franchise is steering toward a big moment — and the ride isn’t over yet.
