Disney Eyes New Live-Action Take on Princess Tiana

Picture Tiana stepping off a painted princess palace and into moonlit New Orleans streets, the air thick with jazz and possibility. It sounds cinematic because it is—Disney is quietly moving forward on a live-action project centered on the Princess and the Frog universe, and Coleman Domingo is said to be in talks to shepherd the idea.

Sources report Domingo, an Oscar nominee known for bringing complex characters to life, is not only attached as a lead creative but will co-write the screenplay with acclaimed theater director Robert O'Hara. The project is in very early development, insiders say, so many pieces remain in motion. Expectations are cautious. Excitement is real.

The original 2009 animated film marked a milestone for Disney. A last major hand-drawn feature, it unfolded in 1920s New Orleans under the direction of John Musker and Ron Clements, drawing from E.D. Baker's The Frog Princess. Anika Noni Rose voiced Tiana, a determined young woman with a dream of opening her own restaurant. When Prince Naveen, voiced by Bruno Campos, is cursed by the sinister Dr. Facilier, voiced by Keith David, Tiana is swept into a magical, unexpected partnership.

But this new effort is not billed as a straight remake. Instead, the studio appears to be pursuing an original story that expands Tiana's world—more spin-off than retread. Will it turn into a prequel that traces Tiana's roots, or a sequel that follows her life after the 2009 tale? For now, that answer remains deliberately out of reach.

Disney's live-action pipeline is broader than any single title. There is a Tangled reimagining underway, with Kathryn Hahn, Diego Luna, Milo Manheim, and Tegan Croft among the cast. Other projects include Stepsisters, a fresh spin on Cinderella, and an original live-action Lilo & Stitch sequel. The studio is clearly betting that revisiting animated classics through a grown-up lens still has creative and commercial currency.
