Some moviegoers might see Avengers: Doomsday before the world does. Social posts have pointed to a special preview at Regency’s Granada Hills 9 on Wednesday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m., ahead of the film’s wide release on December 18. If true, that’s two nights to trade spoilers, theories and sweaty anticipation.
This installment is being billed as the penultimate roar to The Multiverse Saga, a chapter that threads the MCU toward a promised finale in 2027. Stakes are enormous. So are the returns.
Robert Downey Jr. will step into Victor Von Doom for the MCU. The choice alone rewrites expectations: the actor who reshaped Iron Man now embodies one of Marvel’s most enduring antagonists. It’s a twist that has fans arguing online and scribbling alternative timelines on napkins.
The scale is almost dizzying. Producers have confirmed more than 30 characters for Doomsday, and this isn’t just an Avengers reunion. Fantastic Four and X-Men are on the same roster, with several actors from Fox-era X-Men films reportedly reprising familiar roles. Channing Tatum — who popped up as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine — is said to join the mutant ranks here, adding another layer of surprise casting.

Behind the camera are familiar hands: Anthony and Joe Russo, architects of Infinity War and Endgame, return to direct Doomsday. Their involvement doesn’t stop at this movie; they’re also attached to Avengers: Secret Wars, the project slated to close out Phase Six. Reports suggest Secret Wars will move into production in 2027, and Robert Downey Jr. will again appear as Doom in that finale.
Not all returns are villains. Chris Evans is reportedly back as Steve Rogers for both Doomsday and Secret Wars, a development that has reignited hopes for emotional beats and long-awaited resolutions. And at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Hayley Atwell’s return as Peggy Carter for the December film was confirmed, a surprise that delighted many long-time fans.
Kevin Feige has cautioned against the word “reboot.” As he put it, that term carries fears and misunderstandings; what the studio is pursuing feels more like a reset — a tightening of timelines and a fresh throughline that brings X-Men into the center of MCU storytelling. Mutant narratives, he argues, are fundamentally about being different and finding a place in the world. That thematic bedrock is now part of the franchise’s next chapter.
What comes after 2027 is still foggy. But Marvel’s calendar already points forward: a new X-Men film directed by Jake Schreier is slated for May 5, 2028, Ghost Rider with Ryan Gosling for July 28, and Black Panther 3 landing December 15. These dates sketch the shape of Phase Seven and hint at where the reset might lead.
For now, mark December 18 as the official wide opening for Avengers: Doomsday — and keep an eye on local theaters and fan channels for any early screenings. Theories will spread fast. Seats will fill faster. Who knows which surprises will stick and which will be snuffed out by the next twist of the multiverse?
