Practical Magic 2 Surprises Box Office, Tops Spider-Man

Practical Magic 2 didn’t creep up quietly. It burst through the weekend like a spell — and for one week at least, it has Spider-Man looking up from second place.

The sequel to the 1998 cult favorite, reunited with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, opened to a $30 million domestic weekend. Not the avalanche some had forecast, but a firm debut that pushed it to the top of the domestic box office in its first week. Newcomers and niche releases filled the rest of the top ten. Runner, a modest opener starring Owen Wilson and Alan Ritchson, landed fourth with $6.6 million domestically and has yet to roll out internationally. Coyote vs. Acme, Buddy and Insidious Out continued to chip away at their runs, while international-first releases like the Korean sci-fi Hope posted respectable cross-border totals: $3.3 million domestically this weekend, but already $36.2 million from earlier overseas screenings, leaving it with roughly $41.2 million worldwide so far.

The Uprising, featuring Andrew Garfield, opened to $3.2 million and currently sits in the lower half of the top ten as its international release is still pending. By Any Means and a few holdovers rounded out the list, showing that this weekend was less about runaway blockbusters and more about variety — sequels, prestige fare and small-studio gambles all sharing theater space.
