Fimex CEO: AI’s Net Effect on Crypto Is Negative

Federico Variola, CEO of crypto exchange Fimex, warned that artificial intelligence (AI) has had a broadly negative impact on the cryptocurrency market. Speaking on the Chain Reaction program, Variola argued that while AI attracts capital and attention, it also empowers malicious actors, increases security costs and nudges the crypto ecosystem toward centralization.

Liquidity Flows and the Centralization Risk

According to Variola, AI has redirected significant liquidity and investor interest toward AI-driven sectors, pulling capital away from decentralized projects and traditional blockchain development. He said many AI-based solutions, rather than strengthening decentralization, encourage concentrated platforms and centralized models that undermine the core principles of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.

AI Strengthening Threat Actors

Variola emphasized that AI tools have made it easier for attackers to discover vulnerabilities, automate social-engineering campaigns and exploit weak points across DeFi protocols and exchanges. Small development teams, he warned, are particularly exposed because AI-powered reconnaissance can scan codebases and infrastructure much faster than human experts.

Real-World Consequences: Wallet Hacks and Vulnerability Discovery

Security concerns around AI-enabled attacks are not hypothetical. In July, attackers exploited a flaw in the Coldcard hardware wallet—reportedly identified with the help of AI—and siphoned roughly $116 million in Bitcoin from more than 5,200 addresses. Incidents like this highlight how AI can accelerate the pace and scale of hacks targeting wallets, smart contracts and custodial services.

Industry Voices: Faster Attacks, Smarter Defenses

Rodolfo Novak, CEO of Coinkite, warned that AI-assisted code analysis can uncover vulnerabilities more quickly than the most experienced security researchers. At the same time, some security professionals see AI as a double-edged sword: while attackers use it to optimize exploits, defenders can harness the same technology for automated audits, real-time threat detection and improved cybersecurity for exchanges and DeFi platforms.

Balancing Automation and Human Judgment

Variola acknowledged practical uses for AI, such as portfolio assistants and analytics tools that can help investors manage risk and identify opportunities. However, he stressed that final trading and custody decisions must remain with human users. "At the end of the day, the final decision rests with the user," he said, adding that AI should augment—not replace—human judgment in crypto trading and asset management.

What Crypto Projects Should Do Now

To mitigate the growing risks, blockchain projects, exchanges and DeFi teams should invest in AI-based defensive tools, strengthen smart contract audits, prioritize hardware wallet security and expand user education on phishing and social-engineering threats. Regulators and industry stakeholders also need to collaborate on standards that protect retail users while preserving the decentralization that underpins cryptocurrency innovation.

As AI reshapes the threat landscape, the crypto industry faces a pivotal moment: adopt AI defensively and reinforce decentralized architectures, or risk further centralization and elevated security costs that may drive retail users away from DeFi and noncustodial solutions.
