Surface Pro 12 and Laptop 13 debut with Snapdragon X2 Plus

Microsoft's new Surface Pro 12 (2nd edition) and Surface Laptop 13 (2nd edition) are both built around a passively cooled Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus chip with a 6-core CPU and an 80 TOPS neural processing unit for on-device AI.

The company announced the two Windows on ARM devices alongside an AI-first sketching app called Ink Canvas. Microsoft positions the Snapdragon X2 Plus as a generational step: "compared to the previous Surface Pro 12 (which used the original Snapdragon X Plus), the Snapdragon X2 Plus offers 17% faster Office productivity, 18% more efficient battery use, 60% faster graphics and 95% faster local AI inferencing," the company said.

The Surface Pro 12 is a highly portable 12-inch PixelSense LCD with a 3:2 2,196 x 1,464 resolution and a 90 Hz refresh rate. It supports touch and an optional Surface Slim Pen that detects 4,096 levels of pressure. The tablet is available with 16 GB or 24 GB of RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of UFS storage. Microsoft lists the starting price at $1,150; the 16 GB / 512 GB configuration is $1,250 and the 24 GB / 512 GB model is $1,450. Color options are Platinum, Black and Violet.

The tablet uses a passive cooling design for the Snapdragon X2 Plus and includes two USB-C ports, both USB 3.2, with DisplayPort 1.4a support capable of driving two 4K at 60 Hz displays. Microsoft specifies battery life up to 15.5 hours of video playback or up to 11.5 hours of "active web usage." The device supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, weighs 686 g (1.5 lbs) and measures 7.8 mm (0.3 in) thick. Microsoft notes the keyboard cover and the Surface Slim Pen are sold separately, and the tablet can be recharged over USB-C with a charger up to 45 W that customers must supply themselves.

The Surface Laptop 13 shares the Snapdragon X2 Plus and the passive cooling approach in an aluminum chassis with a color-matched keyboard and a next-generation haptic feedback trackpad. Its 13-inch PixelSense LCD has a 3:2 1,920 x 1,280 resolution, 60 Hz refresh rate, touch support and up to 500 nits peak brightness under strengthened glass. The laptop includes a 1080p Surface Studio Camera on the display; the Surface Pro 12 also retains a 10 MP rear-facing camera.

Microsoft offers the Laptop 13 in configurations ranging from 16 GB / 256 GB for $1,200 to 24 GB / 512 GB for $1,500. The laptop weighs 1,225 g (2.96 lbs) and measures 17.5 mm (0.69 in) when closed. Its larger battery is rated for up to 22.5 hours of video playback. For ports the laptop provides two USB-C (USB 3.2) ports, one USB-A (USB 3.2) and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and it ships with a 45 W USB-C adapter for charging.

Accessories and availability

Microsoft also introduced a redesigned Surface Mouse, priced at $80 and arriving in select markets from October 13. The ambidextrous mouse uses Bluetooth 6.0, supports multi-device pairing, includes haptic feedback that registers on-screen events such as window snapping, and has a customizable action button for Copilot.

Microsoft lists the Surface Pro 12 pricing and configurations on Microsoft.com. The company described Ink Canvas as an AI-powered, pen-first app that converts sketches into text rather than generating images from text.
