McLaren Confirms Development of a High-Performance SUV

McLaren confirmed development of "a high performance SUV" and pledged a $675 million cash injection to expand U.K. production.

On 24 September 2026 McLaren announced a $675 million investment to expand its manufacturing operations in the United Kingdom and to create a minimum of 1,000 jobs by 2032.

The company said the funds will finance a new facility separate from its Woking headquarters to build next-generation cars, explicitly naming "a high performance SUV" among planned programmes.

McLaren did not disclose the model name, technical specifications, pricing or a launch date.

Industry speculation says the model could appear before 2030 and may spawn relatives with a front (mid?) engine and all-wheel drive layout. Rumours also claim dealers were shown a high-rider resembling a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT on steroids, reportedly fitted with 24-inch wheels; these reports remain unverified.

Company CEO Michael Leiters supports the project. Leiters worked on the Porsche Cayenne and the Ferrari Purosangue during his earlier roles. Former CEO Mike Flewitt opposed an SUV programme in the 2010s.

Recent digital renderings by Nikita Chuyko published on Kolesa depict a McLaren-styled SUV with a recognisable McLaren front fascia, muscular front fenders, broad shoulders, sharp side skirts and door trim, an Aston Martin-like lower grille, a sporty splitter, conventional door handles and mirrors, and a roofline that slopes behind the B-pillars.

The renderings show a tailgate styling compared with the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe (EV), slim taillights, a wide diffuser and twin large round exhaust tips. The vehicle in the images is finished in lime green with black lower accents, a black roof and black wheels. Interior details are not shown.

McLaren said design and final specifications are not confirmed. The company will need to begin open-road prototype testing before realistic spy images or official technical details emerge.

Beyond the investment amount and the 1,000-job target by 2032, McLaren has offered no firm production schedule or technical specifications for the SUV.
