At an Art Basel opening where cameras never stop, a supposed mishap becomes the centerpiece. The latest images from The Gallerist, released by People, make that collision of spectacle and scandal obvious—and deliciously uncomfortable.

Natalie Portman plays Polina Polinsky, a platinum-blonde gallery owner who will do almost anything to turn chaos into commerce. The film, a grimly funny take on the modern art world, arrives in theaters on December 4. What begins as an opening-night incident at Art Basel Miami rapidly spirals into an extravagant act of curatorial overreach.

The new stills show Portman amid an ensemble cast: Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sterling K. Brown, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Daniel Brühl and Zach Galifianakis. It’s a lineup built to spark headlines. And one headline-grabbing twist: Zach Galifianakis’s character, Dalton Hardbury, an influencer, literally becomes part of a sculpture titled The Emasculator—an outrageous centerpiece that quickly turns the gallery into a must-see spectacle.

One striking photo captures Portman and Galifianakis studying a work by Stella Bergs, played by Da'Vine Joy Randolph. The piece resembles a gigantic pair of pliers. Small moments like that—a glance, a smirk—say more about the film’s appetite for satire than any press release ever could.

Director Katy Yan, who co-wrote the script with James Pedersen, called the movie a black comedy when it screened at Sundance in January. She praised Portman’s dual role as lead actor and producer, noting how fluidly Portman toggled between inhabiting her character on set and wearing the producer’s hat off camera. ‘She does this brilliantly,’ Yan said.

Catherine Zeta-Jones echoed that admiration. She described Portman as exactly the collaborator she hoped for—smart, present and dependable. Zeta-Jones also spoke warmly of working alongside Jenna Ortega, who plays her character’s niece and reunites with Zeta-Jones after their time on Wednesday. ‘It was a wildly entertaining dark comedy,’ she said, ‘one in which flawed women navigate power and consequences in a world that often lets men slide by.’

There’s also a memorable turn from singer and actor Charli XCX. Yan found a kindred spirit in her: someone who loves cinema and even had formal art school roots, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the film’s gallery-world satire.

The Gallerist promises to be equal parts provocation and punchline. It asks a blunt question: when art becomes spectacle, where does responsibility lie—behind the canvas, or in the audience that applauds the stunt?
