Forget spoilers. What if you could press rewind on your memory and watch a beloved movie as if it were the first time? That's the daring question driving Pathé REWIND, a live experiment staged by Dutch cinema chain Pathé that aims to temporarily alter viewers' recollections so 30 people can experience a film's surprises all over again.

The setup is simple and strange. Applicants choose from four well-known titles—Interstellar, The Matrix, La La Land, and Se7en—when they sign up. Organizers then match films to participants based on their viewing preferences and shortlist 30 people for the trial. Each selected guest takes part in a private online hypnotherapy session with Viktor Kramer, a practitioner who brings more than 30 years of experience to the project, before attending the screening.

On the night of the event, participants will be hypnotized again at the cinema and then watch the chosen film on the big screen. The stated aim is not to wipe memories clean but to influence how previous knowledge shapes the rewatch. Can hypnotherapy mute spoilers, dull the edge of familiarity, or revive that rare feeling of not knowing what comes next? Pathé wants to find out.

Think about what makes a first viewing intoxicating: not knowing whom to trust, not seeing the twists that will land, feeling every beat in real time. A film like Se7en depends on a single, haunting reveal. The Matrix hinges on revelations that reframe everything. Pathé REWIND tests whether a carefully guided state of mind can restore that unguarded openness and genuine shock.

Pathé is careful with its language. Organizers emphasize influence over erasure. This is an experiment in perception—an attempt to nudge memory and emotional response—rather than a claim to permanently delete past experiences. How effective that nudge proves to be is exactly what the trial hopes to measure.

Registration is free. Interested film fans have until Thursday, 29 October 2026 to apply. Only 30 participants will be chosen for the in-person screening set for 9 November 2026 at Pathé Buitenhof in The Hague. Curious? Apply and see whether hypnotherapy can truly make a rewatch feel like a premiere.
