Mazda’s first all-electric vehicle, the MX-30, has officially reached the end of the road in Europe and the UK. After being discontinued in the US market years ago, the MX-30 EV is no longer available across European dealerships. The disappearance from online configurators and official statements from Mazda confirm that production and sales of the pure electric crossover have ceased in these markets.

According to Monique Clark from Mazda’s UK PR division, "The Mazda MX-30 BEV has been removed from sale in Europe, and all examples in the UK have now been sold. The Mazda MX-30 BEV has ceased production for both Europe and the UK. However, the award-winning MX-30 R-EV continues to be available for customers who want the EV driving experience with the range confidence provided by the rotary engine generator." This shift signals a new direction for Mazda’s electrification strategy on the continent.
Remaining Choices: The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV
Electric vehicle enthusiasts in Europe can still purchase the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, a unique plug-in hybrid variant. Instead of a conventional setup, this innovative crossover features an 830cc single-rotor rotary engine serving exclusively as a generator. The rotary engine powers a 17.8-kWh battery, providing added range and flexibility—ideal for those seeking electric driving with fewer charging concerns. Notably, this is the only current production car featuring a rotary engine, although it doesn't directly drive the wheels.
Specifications and Design
The Mazda MX-30 boasts a distinctive design with rear-hinged “freestyle” doors reminiscent of the RX-8. In addition to the R-EV range-extender, other global markets like Japan offer a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter gasoline engine with mild-hybrid technology, expanding the model’s versatility. This small crossover, introduced about five years ago, blends stylish aesthetics with eco-friendly engineering.
Performance, Comparisons, and Market Positioning
Compared to rivals in the compact electric SUV segment, the MX-30 focused on urban efficiency rather than long-distance range. The electric-only variant’s modest battery limited total range but delivered nimble city performance and solid build quality. The Future: Mazda’s Evolving Electrification Plans
Looking ahead, Mazda is expanding its global electrified lineup. The brand is set to launch the larger EZ-60 SUV in China with a non-rotary range extender. As seen with the EZ-6 sedan’s rebranding to the Mazda 6e in Europe, the EZ-60 could soon enter European markets as the CX-6e. However, due to new tariffs, these China-made models are unlikely to reach the United States any time soon.
