Peter Sarsgaard Joins The Last of Us Season 3 Cast

Peter Sarsgaard is heading into the apocalypse. News broke that he’ll appear in Season 3 of HBO’s The Last of Us — not as a familiar face from the games, but as someone new: Amun, a leader among the Seraphites.

ScreenRant first named Sarsgaard among the newcomers. Casting a seasoned actor like him signals the showrunners want to deepen the series’ moral grey zones; Sarsgaard’s history with intense, layered roles makes him a natural fit for the brutal, zealous world of the Seraphites.

Sarsgaard will portray Amun, a brand-new Seraphite leader created for the series and absent from the games.

The Seraphites have already loomed large in the television adaptation, a faction whose religious zeal and violent discipline complicate every encounter. Introducing Amun expands that thread. New characters like this let the show breathe beyond the source material, giving writers room to explore power, faith and survival in ways the games never did.

Li Jun Li is also on board as Miriam, who — according to casting notes — is the mother of Yara and Lev. Like Amun, Miriam is original to the show, another sign that Season 3 will continue to reshape the game’s chapters for television audiences.

Sarsgaard isn’t just a name on a call sheet. He arrives with pedigree: two Emmy nominations to his credit, one for Dopesick (2022) and another for Presumed Innocent (2025). For newcomers to the franchise, The Last of Us began as a 2013 PlayStation 3 title, later remastered for PS4 in 2014. The Left Behind DLC, also released in 2014, focused on Ellie and her friend Riley — a compact, emotional tale that fed the larger narrative. The TV show has adapted and expanded those beats, turning interstitial scenes into fully realized episodes.
