WhatsApp Lets You Send Texts That Disappear After Reading

Imagine a text that evaporates the moment someone opens it. No copy, no forward, no replay—just a single, fleeting glimpse.

WABetaInfo has found evidence that WhatsApp is rolling out a 'view once' option for plain text messages. On iPhone, the new choice appears when you long-press the send button after typing a message: 'Send as view once.' Tap it, and the message behaves like a paper note burned after reading.

The recipient gets one chance to read. After that, the message is removed from the chat automatically. It won't linger in the conversation history, and WhatsApp is taking extra steps to lock down how that moment is handled.

WhatsApp will block copying, forwarding, screenshots and screen recordings for these messages.

Functionally, this mirrors the existing view-once feature for photos, videos and voice notes, but adapted for text. The change targets both one-to-one conversations and group chats. Channels, however, are excluded—the persistent, broadcast nature of channels runs counter to a message designed to vanish after a single read.

Android users shouldn't feel left out for long: WhatsApp's dev team is preparing the feature for Android at the same time. For now the option is still in development, so expect it to show up first in beta builds before a wider release.
