Peter Jackson Finally Returns to Direct Tintin Sequel

After more than a decade of rumors, Peter Jackson is signaling a full return to narrative filmmaking — and with a familiar passport in hand. In a wide-ranging conversation with Gold Derby, Jackson revealed that he and long-time collaborator Fran Walsh have completed the script for a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin, the motion-capture adventure originally directed by Steven Spielberg.

Back then Jackson produced while Spielberg directed. The plan was always to swap seats for round two: Jackson would direct, Spielberg would step back into a producing role. Time got in the way. Fifteen years passed. But Jackson says the tale never lost its spark, and now the screenplay is finished.

With the script wrapped, Jackson admits that his next directing credit is likely to be the Tintin sequel.

It would mark a notable return to big-genre filmmaking. Jackson's last theatrical directing job was The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in 2014. Since then he's stayed active in other roles — producing projects like Mortal Engines in 2018 and the animated The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim in 2024, while also steering acclaimed documentaries such as They Shall Not Grow Old and the Beatles Get Back films.

Not everything has been straightforward. In early 2026 Jackson spoke candidly about considering a step back from directing after the death of his longtime cinematographer Andrew Lesnie, admitting that loss made him hesitate about returning to the director's chair. Still, the creative engine kept turning.

Case in point: Jackson also confirmed that production on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is already underway — four days into shooting, he said, with Jackson as producer and Andy Serkis directing. That film is aimed at a late 2027 release.

As for Tintin, neither Jackson nor his collaborators have announced a concrete shooting schedule. Will he swap Middle-earth for globe-trotting comic-book capers? If the script is any guide, audiences may soon find out.
