I Am Legend 2 Will Spare Dogs — Goldsman Promises Fans

Few cinematic moments have stuck in viewers' throats like Sam's death in 2007's I Am Legend. It was short. Brutal. Heartbreaking. And Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the original film and is shepherding the sequel, says he won't put audiences through that again.

Speaking with Radio Times, Goldsman admitted he underestimated how deeply one small, loyal dog would wound millions of viewers. He even joked about it: "I'm afraid if we kill a dog again, I won't survive the reaction." He wasn't entirely kidding. The scene, he explained, triggered a far louder response than the movie's larger-scale catastrophe — the near-extinction of humanity — and that contrast taught the creative team a lesson about emotional stakes.

The script for I Am Legend 2 is still being written. Progress has been slow, messy and stubborn in the way big studio projects often are. Goldsman describes the process like pushing a stalled car up a hill: frustrating but relentless. He and his collaborators have run into obstacles over the years, yet they keep circling back, rewriting, and recalibrating until the story feels ready.

One of the clearest signs that the sequel is moving forward came in 2026, when Steven Caple Jr., best known for Creed II, signed on to direct. Will Smith is set to return as Robert Neville, and Michael B. Jordan joins the cast in a key role. Details remain guarded, but the creative pivot is notable: this sequel won't simply pick up from the theatrical ending of the 2007 film.

Remember that controversial finale? In theaters, Neville dies trying to save a cure. But the alternate ending — the version many fans and filmmakers have referenced since — lets him live and reveals the infected as sentient beings with a social order of their own. According to Smith, the sequel was originally conceived as a prequel, then reshaped around that alternate ending. Michael B. Jordan's character, Smith has hinted, leads a new settlement in Connecticut — a community Neville eventually crosses paths with.

So where do the dogs fit into this new world? Goldsman has been explicit: any canine characters in the sequel will not suffer the same fate as Sam. That doesn't mean animals won't matter. On the contrary, their presence could be used to explore empathy, trust and what civilization looks like when the rules change. Whether the film leans closer to Richard Matheson's novel, the tone of the first movie, or fresh ideas from the writers remains to be seen.

There is no release date yet, and no start date for filming. For now, the production is in a development dance — equal parts patience and pressure. Fans hungry for closure, continuation or reinvention will have to wait a little longer, but the team seems intent on honoring the emotional truths that made the original linger in people's minds.

Expect surprises. And maybe fewer shattered hearts in the canine department.
