Apple: iPhone Duo inner display top layer is replaceable

Apple says the iPhone Duo's top layer of the foldable main display is replaceable, and with active AppleCare the matte screen cover costs $19.99 to replace, according to Apple's service and repair website.

Customers must visit one of Apple's Service Providers for the replacement.

AppleCare also lists $29 for cover display or back glass repairs and $99 for inner display replacement. Accidental damage service carries a $99 fee; theft and loss protection is $149.

In a recent interview, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering said the company wanted to give users the option to replace the top layer when it wears down and that it had tried to make the first layer as durable as possible.

Two questions remain: whether the top layer is truly user replaceable and whether third parties will offer alternative films, such as privacy layers or glossy covers.

Apple's site does not state the replacement cost without AppleCare.

More definitive answers should appear once iPhone Duo begins shipping.

For comparison, Samsung offers the first replacement free for Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip phones if done within 12 months of purchase; subsequent replacements cost $19.99.
