Christopher Abbott is joining Marvel’s X-Men — and he admitted something that sounds like a line from a Hollywood sitcom: he hasn’t read the script. Short sentence. Big surprise.
Abbott will portray a new version of Charles Xavier, aka Professor X, in the film that Marvel says will introduce a fresh mutant team to the MCU. The studio unveiled its starry lineup in August 2026: Sydney Sweeney as Jean Grey, Kate Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Indya Navarti as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver stepping in as the film’s antagonist, Mister Sinister.
What Abbott did read — or at least what he was sent for auditions — wasn’t a finished screenplay. He describes a process built around chemistry and character: an initial video audition, then an in-person callback. The acting materials were deliberately focused on the human side of these iconic figures rather than on plot spoilers or blockbuster set pieces.

He hasn’t seen the full script yet, but he’s unmistakably excited to work with director Jake Schreier and this new ensemble.
Schreier, who directed Marvel’s Thunderbolts, was officially tapped for X-Men in July 2025. His appointment signals a desire at Marvel to reframe the franchise with a director who can balance blockbuster spectacle and quieter character beats. Abbott seems to be on the same page: he’s described the project as an opportunity to find his own, personal take on a character most actors only dream of playing.
And yes, Abbott is a longtime X-Men fan. He grew up on the cartoons, the comics and the toys — the sort of childhood connection that gives an actor something to build on when stepping into a role with so much cultural baggage. That affection, he says, is part of what makes shaping a new Professor X so appealing.
This won’t be Abbott’s first Marvel adjacent turn. He previously appeared in a supporting role in Kraven the Hunter and jokes about the contrast between that experience and what’s coming next. Audiences, meanwhile, are left to wait and wonder how much of the classic X-Men mythology will shift when this cast debuts their version of the team.
Marvel has set the release date for May 5, 2028. Plenty can change between now and opening weekend. Scripts get rewritten. Actors refine choices. Directors tweak tone. But the idea of a fresh Professor X, portrayed by someone who’s approaching the part with curiosity rather than a completed blueprint, is a small, intriguing gamble.
Are we watching the start of a bold new chapter for the mutants? Time — and that unread script — will tell.
