Anthropic announced today that it will allocate 5% of its shares to a newly created public benefit fund, which the company says will provide "increased flexibility and scale" to support projects intended for societal good.
Fund structure and equity commitment
The company said the fund will be structured as a wholly-owned entity within Anthropic. Initially Anthropic will commit 5% of its shares to the fund, with an option to contribute an additional 2% of shares for every 50% increase in Anthropic's value.
Intended uses and ongoing AI impact work
Anthropic offered only broad examples of how the fund might be used, citing possibilities such as "large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations."

The announcement referenced the company’s existing $200 million commitment to study AI’s impact on the job market and added that the fund could enable more ambitious responses if needed. In the company’s words, "Given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed. The Fund will have the versatility to pursue them."
Governance and industry context
The announcement comes amid growing negative public sentiment toward the AI industry, which CEO Dario Amodei has described as "fundamentally a crisis of trust." Anthropic said it will provide further details about the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months.
