Spotify is rolling out a new Premium Family feature called Managed accounts that hands parents more control over what their children hear and see on the service. The update is arriving first in a handful of markets and focuses on filter tools, content bans and safety tweaks for younger listeners.
What the new parental controls actually do
Managed accounts let parents tailor a child’s Spotify experience without blocking their creativity. Key controls include:
- Filtering out explicit tracks across the service.
- Banning specific songs, albums or artists so they won’t appear in a child’s library or recommendations.
- Hiding short videos that sometimes autoplay with certain tracks.
- Removing the messaging feature entirely from kids’ accounts to limit direct contact.
These limits are applied to accounts for children under 13 and are available only to Premium Family plan holders.
Where it’s available — and how it differs from Spotify Kids
The Managed accounts rollout begins in select markets: the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany, France and the Netherlands. Importantly, these accounts are separate from the Spotify Kids app — they’re a Family-plan feature that sits alongside, not inside, the child-focused app.

So what can kids still do?
Even with restrictions in place, children can curate their own playlists and select songs. Spotify’s algorithm will continue to suggest music based on their listening habits, but those recommendations are kept distinct from the parent’s suggested tracks and artists — so kids get personalized suggestions within the guardrails set by parents.
Why this matters for families
Streaming services have increasingly become social and multimedia platforms, and that complexity makes parental controls more important than ever. Managed accounts strike a balance: they let parents block content they consider inappropriate while still allowing kids the freedom to explore and develop musical taste.
If you’re on a Premium Family plan, check your account settings to see whether Managed accounts are live in your region and to start customizing controls for younger listeners.
