BMW unveils redesigned i4 for 2026 with bigger range and sharper looks

BMW has revealed the refreshed i4 for 2026, an updated electric sedan that raises the bar in efficiency, performance, and technology. The new i4 keeps the familiar silhouette but introduces powertrain upgrades and smarter electronics that push range and acceleration beyond the previous generation.

Key technology upgrade: SiC inverters

One of the headline changes is the adoption of silicon carbide (SiC) inverters. These higher-efficiency semiconductors reduce energy loss in the powertrain, helping BMW stretch the i4s driving range without increasing battery capacity. For drivers, that means more kilometers per charge and improved charging behavior across real-world conditions.

Range and battery

The 2026 i4 retains an 83.4 kWh battery pack across the lineup, but thanks to the SiC tech and powertrain refinements, range figures have climbed. BMW says the base eDrive40 can now exceed 480 km on a single charge. With 18-inch wheels the eDrive40 is rated at about 536 km, a roughly 24 km gain from the previous model. Even with 19-inch wheels, range improves to around 494 km.

Performance: meet the new i4 M60

The performance headline is the arrival of the i4 M60, which replaces the former M50. The M60 uses a dual-motor layout producing a combined 593 horsepower—an increase of 57 hp—and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Despite the power increase, BMW reports improved efficiency: the M60 delivers up to 17.5 km more range with 19-inch wheels and 8 km more with 20-inch wheels compared with the prior generation.

Highlights:

  • Battery: 83.4 kWh (all versions)
  • Fast charging: up to 200 kW DC
  • eDrive40: ~335 hp
  • xDrive40: ~396 hp
  • i4 M60: 593 hp, 0-100 km/h in 3.6 s

Charging and real-world gains

BMW says the i4 supports up to 200 kW DC fast charging. Under ideal conditions and using a suitable DC station, a 10-minute charge can add roughly 140–170 km of range, according to the company. That sort of quick top-up will be especially useful on longer trips and for drivers who rely on fast public chargers.

Features and availability

Orders for the 2026 i4 have opened in the United States after an initial European debut. All trims now come standard with a tire repair kit, and BMW has added a Drive Recorder function to the Parking Assistant Professional package, enhancing safety and convenience for everyday driving and parking scenarios.

This update positions the i4 strongly in the competitive electric sedan market, offering a balanced mix of efficiency gains, sharper performance, and everyday usability. Whether buyers prioritize range, sportiness, or advanced tech, the 2026 i4 aims to cover all bases without sacrificing BMWs driving DNA.
