BYD Hits Major Milestone as Denza D9 Tops 300,000 Deliveries

BYD has officially celebrated delivery of the 300,000th Denza D9, an achievement the automaker marked at its Denza Night event in Beijing. Launched in August 2022, the D9 has become a runaway success in China’s booming New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market — selling faster than any rival MPV in the world.

How the D9 found its audience

The Denza D9 is offered both as a plug-in hybrid (the DM-1 long-range option) and as a fully electric model, giving buyers a choice between extended-range convenience and zero-tailpipe emissions. Pricing spans roughly from 309,800 yuan ($32,800) up to about 526,600 yuan ($74,400), and BYD says a majority of buyers have been choosing well-equipped versions: more than half of customers picked configurations priced above 400,000 yuan, and a substantial share opted for top-spec trims.

That appetite for premium MPVs has pushed total D9 sales past 300,000 in under three years — a pace that has earned it the label of the world’s fastest-selling NEV MPV. The D9 competes directly with other premium Chinese multi-purpose vehicles and sits alongside rivals such as Volvo’s EM90 (an electric MPV that arrived in 2023 on a similar large-cabin philosophy).

Design, interior and usability

The Denza D9 is built with family and chauffeur-driven use in mind. It offers a flexible seven-seat layout, an upscale cabin with attention to passenger comfort, and features commonly expected in high-end MPVs: spacious second-row seating, multiple tech and convenience features, and sound insulation aimed at long-distance comfort. Performance and range vary by powertrain, but the EV variant emphasizes zero-emission driving suitable for city and intercity travel.

Highlights:

  • Seating for up to seven passengers
  • Choice of plug-in hybrid (DM-1) or full EV powertrains
  • Strong uptake for high-trim, premium configurations

Europe on the horizon; U.S. still off the table

At Denza Night BYD confirmed plans to introduce the D9 to Europe. The model will be marketed under the Denza brand, BYD’s more premium sub-brand intended for international expansion. BYD has already been ramping up its European presence — selling an estimated 138,390 passenger cars in Europe from January to October 2025 — and it’s banking on the D9’s domestic popularity to translate overseas.

However, there are no current plans to bring the D9 to the United States. High tariffs, regulatory complexity, and political sensitivities have kept BYD’s passenger-car range out of the U.S. market. The company is present in North America in other ways: BYD sells commercial buses and trucks, provides energy storage solutions, operates commercial vehicle manufacturing in California, and is establishing a North American headquarters there. Plans to build a passenger-car factory in Mexico have also been reported, which could create a route for future U.S. access.

Market context and what to watch

BYD’s wider success underscores the D9’s achievement. The automaker set a new record in 2024 with 4,272,145 vehicles sold — a 41.3% year-on-year increase — and continues to push into Western markets with both mainstream and premium models. The sporty Denza Z is even being prepped for a Nürburgring outing, signaling ambitions beyond family transport and into performance and brand-building.

Whether the D9 becomes a familiar sight on European roads will depend on how BYD adapts the MPV for local regulations and customer preferences. For now, the 300,000-unit milestone cements the D9 as one of China’s standout NEV successes and a flagship example of how well-targeted EV and plug-in hybrid models can dominate their segments.

"The Denza D9’s rapid sales pace shows strong demand for premium, large-cabin NEVs in China — and its European debut will be a key test for BYD’s overseas strategy," industry analysts note.

Nice market play by BYD, but I feel europeans might not all buy giant MPVs. Interiors look premium tho, question is real world range, and service.

Wait 300k in under 3 years? wow.. impressive but is that mostly hybrid sales or full EVs? pricing seems steep for many buyers, curious
