If you were bracing for a brisk return to Dragonstone, HBO just told us to clear our schedules. The first episode of House of the Dragon season three is slated to run about 72 minutes, according to the network's programming notes.
At roughly 72 minutes, the S3 premiere is the third-longest episode in the series so far. That runtime likely includes the end credits and the customary "Inside the Episode" segment—HBO's little behind-the-scenes encore that usually appears after the story wraps. Even so, this premiere is noticeably longer than the opening installments of the prior seasons: season one started with 65 minutes, season two with 58.
Most House of the Dragon episodes have hovered between 50 and 65 minutes. Longer runs make sense here; the show has been quietly building toward a colossal confrontation between the Blacks and the Greens. Battles that define a war need room. Scenes must breathe. Stakes must land.
This length places the premiere behind only two episodes in total runtime: the season two finale, "The Queen Who Ever Was" (84 minutes), and season two's "Smallfolk" (77 minutes). With seasons two and three trimmed to eight episodes apiece—down from ten in season one—it's no surprise some chapters have swelled to carry the narrative weight.
How does it compare to Game of Thrones' most famous set-piece hours? The season three premiere won't eclipse the run of "The Long Night," but it will outlast classic battle episodes such as "Blackwater" (55 minutes), "The Watchers on the Wall" (50 minutes), and "Battle of the Bastards" (59 minutes). And if you watched the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms spinoff, remember those episodes were brisk—roughly 30 to 35 minutes each—so this premiere will feel more than twice as long by comparison.
