Onstage at the Dolby Colosseum in Caesars Palace, during a special CinemaCon presentation, the pair introduced a new trailer for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and made a promise: this third chapter won’t simply repeat what came before. Short sentence. Big claim.

There’s pressure, sure. After two acclaimed entries and a cliffhanger that left audiences buzzing, fans have waited three years for this follow-up. But Lord and Miller aren’t hiding behind legacy. Instead, they’ve been working directly alongside Sony Pictures Animation — even guiding post-production workflows while directing Project Hail Mary — so the emotional core of this franchise stays razor-sharp as the visuals go bolder.

They name-checked the directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson and spoke about collaboration the way a band talks about a tour: messy, intense, electrifying. Phil called the creative team a sort of Travelling Wilburys of animation, an all-star collective of designers, artists, animators and technical innovators. The vibe was almost tangible. You could feel the room lean in.

“People watch these films to experience something they’ve never seen,” Christopher Miller said. Then Lord added, almost defiantly: they wrote a rulebook for the first movie, discarded it for the second, and now the book is gone. What remains is experimentation. What remains is risk. This is not a sequel—it's a reinvention.

Expect the visuals to push boundaries and the storytelling to wander into territories the previous films simply couldn’t reach. That’s the sell. That’s the gamble. And with Sony’s full backing, Lord and Miller insist they have both the freedom and the team to pull it off.
