Mix Fold 5 Certified as Redmi Note 17 Series Nears Launch

China's regulators have just added a fresh chapter to Xiaomi's unfolding saga: a new foldable, likely the Mix Fold 5, appears to have cleared the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) under model number 2608BPX34C. It sounds like another incremental update, but the paperwork hints at a bolder redesign—one that borrows from the wider, book-like proportions we've seen in devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold8 and even the iPhone Ultra.

Think bigger inner canvas. Rumors now point to a 7.6-inch folding display, a size that nudges the Mix Fold line toward a tablet-first experience when opened. Under the hood, sources expect Xiaomi to deploy its second-generation Xring O3 system-on-chip, following last year’s Xring O1. If true, this would be Xiaomi pushing more of its silicon strategy into flagship hardware—an attempt to control performance and efficiency from top to bottom.

Software will matter as much as silicon. The Mix Fold 5 is widely tipped to ship with Android 17 layered beneath HyperOS 4, Xiaomi’s latest take on a unified interface. Camera chatter keeps getting louder, too: a rumored 200MP main sensor aims to compete on megapixels and processing; a side-mounted fingerprint scanner keeps ergonomics simple; and a 6,000 mAh battery promises the kind of endurance fans have begun to expect from large foldables.

Certification documents don't sell features, but they do narrow launch windows. And while Xiaomi is coy about dates, the MIIT entry makes one thing clear: the Mix Fold 5 is moving from rumor to reality.

It isn’t only the foldable making headlines. Thailand’s NBTC has granted certification to two global Redmi Note 17 models—26081RA18G for the base and 2609FRA74G for the Pro Max—signaling Xiaomi’s next-generation mid-rangers are prepping for an international push. Certification alone reveals little beyond identity, but earlier NCC and Eurofins filings have already sketched a tempting spec sheet for the Pro Max: a 9,210 mAh battery, 100W fast charging and an IP68 rating that will please users who want ruggedness without flagship prices.

Storage options for global markets look generous. Expect four RAM/storage combinations across the line: 8/256GB, 8/512GB, 12/256GB and 12/512GB. The standard Redmi Note 17, meanwhile, appears nearly identical to its Chinese counterpart with one notable concession for global variants—a slightly smaller 7,700 mAh cell instead of the 8,000 mAh pack reported for China. India remains on the roadmap: current chatter places a Redmi Note 17 debut there on August 6.

What should you take away from all this? Xiaomi is doubling down on range. From an ambitious foldable that inches toward tablet territory to a Redmi Note family that stretches battery life and charging speeds, the company is covering both premium experimentation and mass-market endurance. The MIIT and NBTC paperwork don't tell the whole story, but they point to launches that could reshape the choices available this autumn.
