Android 17, released and made available to users in June 2026, is installed on only about one percent of active Android devices worldwide.

How the adoption figures were measured

The reported shares are not the result of a survey of individual users. With more than 3.8 billion active Android users, surveying every user would be impractical. Instead, the figures reflect cumulative adoption of Android versions based on Android Studio data. The latest estimates come from devices that connected to the Google Play store during a seven-day period.

Current distribution of Android versions

Android 16 currently holds the largest single share of active devices. The most recent data put Android 16 at just over 25 percent of active Android devices in October 2026. By comparison, Android 16 accounted for 7.5 percent of devices in December 2025. Based on that growth, Android 17's share is expected to rise; it is likely to reach at least 20 percent next year.

  • Android 16: just over 25 percent (October 2026)
  • Android 14: more than 15 percent
  • Android 15: 14.7 percent
  • Android 13: close to 12 percent
  • Android 11: 10.5 percent
  • Android 12: 9.6 percent

Approximately one third of active devices remain on Android 14 or 15 and have not upgraded to Android 16.

Update eligibility and device support

Not all Android phones are eligible to receive every major update. Flagship models typically receive longer software support, while lower-cost phones often receive only one or two major Android updates before leaving the support cycle. As a result, many devices may never reach Android 15 even if their owners wish to install it.
