Imagine a former James Bond trading tuxedos for tactical gear. Surprising? Absolutely. Intriguing? Even more so.
Netflix has quietly stacked the deck for Extraction 3, adding several high-profile names to a franchise that has steadily ballooned from a lean action thriller into a proper on-screen universe. Leading the surprise is Pierce Brosnan, the Irish actor best known for suiting up as 007 through the late ’90s and early 2000s. He won’t be alone: the new roster also includes Ma Dong-seok (also known as Don Lee), Indonesian action star Joe Taslim, British character actor Chi Lewis-Parry, and rising young talent Siena Agudong. Production is currently underway in Australia, though specific roles remain under wraps.
What this casting signals is not just star power. It’s tonal breadth. Brosnan brings old-school charm and a sly gravitas that can tilt a ruthless action film toward something darker or more playful, depending on how the filmmakers use him. Don Lee and Joe Taslim are proven physical presences—fighters who can ground big set pieces with lived-in menace. Add a smaller, nimble actor like Agudong and you get range, not just muscle.

Extraction began life on the page as an Andy Parks graphic novel and found new life under the Russos’ watch, with Chris Hemsworth embodying Tyler Rake, a lone mercenary whose missions double as emotional odysseys. The first film exploded on Netflix in 2020; it reportedly became the streamer’s biggest opening at the time and earned a respectable 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. That success birthed a sequel in 2023—darker, somehow more intimate—and it climbed to 79% among critics while entering Netflix’s list of most-watched features.
Sam Hargrave, who directed the first two films, is returning to helm the third. Behind the scenes, screenwriting duties have shifted from Joe Russo to David Weil, though Russo remains involved as an executive producer alongside Hargrave, Hemsworth, Anthony Russo and other producers. That mix of continuity and fresh creative input suggests Extraction 3 will aim to expand its scope without throwing away the blunt-force thrills that made it a hit.
No one’s revealed plot details yet, but the casting alone hints at ambition: a wider geographical sweep, interlocking character threads, maybe even a few unexpected alliances.
Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani and Idris Elba are already confirmed to return; Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, Farahani as Nik Khan’s cohort, and Elba who first appeared in the second film. Their presence anchors the franchise even as new faces arrive to complicate the world. Netflix is also feeding the Extraction ecosystem with spin-offs. A feature called Tygo will put Don Lee’s Train to Busan alum Don Lee in the lead, while a series titled Mercenary—starring Omar Sy, Boyd Holbrook and Natalie Dormer—aims to broaden the narrative map. Both spinoff shoots wrapped last March, underlining Netflix’s larger plan: build a universe that can sustain multiple stories at once.
For Brosnan, the move is an interesting career pivot. After shaping a generation’s idea of Bond across GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day, he’s revisiting blockbuster territory in a different register. His recent work has ranged from whimsical (Mrs. Doubtfire) to dramatic (The Thursday Murder Club) and commercial (Mamma Mia!). So seeing him in a high-octane, stunt-driven world feels like a calculated, enjoyable stretch.
Fans will watch closely for how Extraction 3 balances spectacle with character. The first film was a showcase for choreography—long takes, claustrophobic fights, vehicular mayhem—and the second pushed those elements further while threading a personal narrative through the carnage. If the new cast is any indication, the third installment could deepen the emotional stakes while widening the geopolitical canvas.
Expect big set pieces. Expect sharper interpersonal friction. Expect Netflix to keep a tight lid on plot until its marketing machine is ready. In the meantime, the franchise’s transformation—from a single high-octane rescue to a multi-pronged cinematic world—feels inevitable. And with Brosnan stepping into the fray, Extraction 3 might just surprise us in ways it hasn’t since the first stunned the streaming charts.
Stay tuned: casting announcements are rarely the end of the story. They’re the first line in the next chapter.

Hmm is this real or just casting wishful thinking? Brosnan's cool but will he fit the Rake universe, tonewise... feels risky, curious tho
Wow Pierce Brosnan in Extraction? didnt see that coming. Love the old-school charm vs hardcore stunts. Hope they actually give him meat, not just a blink cameo. Fingers crossed!
