A fresh leak suggests Sony's flagship noise-cancelling headphones are getting a budget cousin — and the first images make that cousin look like a very familiar friend.
High-resolution renders of the WH-1000XM4C appeared online ahead of a rumored September 7 announcement, showing a model that keeps the XM4's silhouette while trimming costs through a handful of small, deliberate changes.
Veteran leaker Roland Quandt estimates a launch price near €249 and £219, roughly €130/£130 below the XM4's 2020 debut price. That gap is meaningful: enough to pull in buyers who liked the original but balked at full flagship money.

On the outside, Sony hasn’t reinvented the wheel. The XM4C sticks to the proven design language, offering classic black and platinum silver, plus a new lavender option that wasn’t available on the original. One curious detail in the renders: the NFC badge on the left earcup appears to be gone. Quick-pair NFC may be a casualty of the down-tiering.
Connections and core audio specs remain familiar. You still get the 3.5mm jack and USB-C for wired listening and charging. Inside, the hardware looks unchanged on paper — 40mm drivers and a reported 4Hz–40kHz frequency response — but wireless gets a notable refresh: Bluetooth jumps to version 6 from the XM4’s Bluetooth 5.
The WH-1000XM4C looks like a conscious trade-off: fewer premium extras for a lower price and a couple of sensible upgrades.

Battery life trims down slightly compared with the 2020 model, with about 27 hours of ANC-on playback and roughly 34 hours with noise cancellation off. Packaging also appears simplified, with a plain grey carrying case and only the essential accessories included.
Sony hasn’t confirmed the new model yet, but multiple reports point to a September 7 reveal. If the leaks hold, the XM4C could be the pragmatic choice for people who want top-tier noise cancellation and comfort without paying flagship prices — and that could reshape how many of us shop for premium headphones this season.
