Samsung is reportedly preparing to return an under-display camera to its book-style foldables next year, according to a tipster on X.
The tipster also says the device will receive significant internal changes while keeping a similar external profile, with reported thicknesses of 3.9 mm when open and 7.9 mm when closed. The source did not provide additional model details.
Samsung first adopted an under-display camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, launched in 2021, and retained that approach through the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The company moved to a punch-hole cutout for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in 2025, a change widely interpreted as intended to improve selfie image quality. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 also use a punch-hole design this year.

Background and trade-offs
An under-display camera places the camera sensor beneath the display so the inner screen shows no visible cutout, but that arrangement typically reduces the light reaching the sensor and can weaken photo quality. Apple, which recently introduced an inner under-screen camera on the iPhone Duo, has noted the same limitation: Apple calls the inner unit the "FaceTime camera" and its images are weaker than the outer camera. The report on Samsung does not say whether the company has found a way to address that image-quality trade-off.
