When Mike Flanagan describes a project as "just a mountain," you picture something vast, immovable, and a little terrifying. He wasn't exaggerating.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly while discussing his upcoming Carrie series for Prime Video, Flanagan slipped the Warhammer 40,000 project into a list of his next big commitments and offered that one-line description. He gave no further details, leaving industry watchers to wonder: does the mountain mean budget, scope, mythology, or all of the above?
Henry Cavill has been attached to this live-action adaptation since 2022, both as lead actor and executive producer. Cavill’s status as a longtime tabletop fan made him the natural flag-bearer for a franchise that has sprawled into novels, video games, comics, and animation since its 1987 beginnings. Amazon MGM Studios is developing the series for Prime Video, and Flanagan officially joined the creative team in 2026 to shape the story and move into screenplay writing after preparing an initial outline.

Warhammer 40,000 is not a simple IP. Think millennia of politics, crusades, unknowable horrors and armies that span star systems. It’s a tapestry with threads that could sustain dozens of stories. How do you choose a single thread? How do you keep the essence without drowning viewers in lore? Those are the questions any creative team faces when adapting such a monumental universe.
Practical questions remain unanswered. Which corner of the 40K galaxy will the series explore? Will it zoom in on a lone hero or attempt an epic, ensemble sweep? No release date or production start has been announced. For now, Flanagan’s metaphor is the clearest signal fans have: this will be ambitious, deliberate, and built to feel large.
The gamble is obvious. Aim big and risk scattering the story. Aim small and risk betraying what drew audiences to the tabletop world in the first place. Either way, when a project this size finally climbs into view, viewers and longtime fans will be watching every foothold.
