Azrael Replaces Bruce Wayne as Batman in Knightquest

Gotham's mantle is changing hands. The city that has seen many Batmen is about to test another—and this time the cowl comes with a blade of its own.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment unveiled the first official trailer for Batman: Knightfall Part 2: Knightquest, the second installment in the R-rated animated trilogy. The footage picks up directly where Part 1 left off: after Bane breaks Bruce Wayne's back, the Dark Knight can no longer patrol the streets. Chaos follows. Arkham's worst are on the loose. The stakes are personal and brutal.

In Knightquest, Jean-Paul Valley — Azrael — steps into the cowl after Bruce is paralyzed. Azrael's methods are far harsher than Bruce's. He brings a surgical, unforgiving edge to crimefighting, and that sharpness could be Gotham's salvation—or its undoing.

The Knightquest title draws straight from the classic comics, and fans are already reading the lineup: Knightfall, Knightquest, then likely Knight's End for the trilogy closer slated for 2027. Expect a faithful, adult-oriented adaptation that doesn't shy away from the darker beats of the comic saga.

On the voice front, Anson Mount returns as Batman, while Pablo Schreiber lends his voice to Jean-Paul Valley/Azrael. Michael Mando returns as Bane. Jack Griffo appears as Tim Drake, the Robin of this arc, and Bruce Boxleitner voices Commissioner Gordon. Simon Templeman takes the role of Alfred. The trailer also teases Dick Grayson as Nightwing in one of his classic comic costumes, though the voice casting for the former Robin hasn't been confirmed.

Warner Bros.' short synopsis is blunt: Bruce Wayne is left paralyzed from the waist down after Bane's assault and must hand Gotham's protection to someone else. Azrael accepts the task, but his violent approach raises questions about whether anyone can stop Bane's schemes without becoming the very thing they fight.

Part 1 landed with critics and audiences alike. Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall holds a 92% critics score and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes after its late-August release, and the film is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. With Knightquest scheduled to arrive later this year and the trilogy finale expected in 2027, the animated saga is shaping up to be one of DC's most talked-about projects.

Meanwhile, another adult take on the Batman mythos will appear on the live-action side: Clayface, part of James Gunn's new cinematic slate, is set to open October 23, directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Reiss Harris as Matt Hagen, the man who becomes the shapeshifting monster known as Clayface.

Trailers promise intensity. Fans promise debate. Who will wear the cowl when the city needs it most?
