Microsoft has unveiled the pocket-sized Xbox Nano controller, a very small gamepad with a built-in rechargeable battery and a $49.99 starting price. The company positions the device for mobile gamers, younger players and people who travel frequently, saying the controller is easy to carry and intended as a lightweight companion for phones and portable systems.

Design and size
Designers kept the form deliberately compact: the Nano measures just slightly more than 12.7 centimetres in length, a size Microsoft says fits comfortably alongside most smartphones and slips into a pocket. Despite the reduced footprint, engineers preserved all the standard Xbox controller buttons so users retain familiar controls in a much smaller body.

Connectivity and features
The Nano supports both Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth, allowing straightforward connections to consoles, tablets, personal computers and smartphones. Microsoft fitted a USB-C port and a quick-pair button at the top of the unit to simplify charging and establishing a connection. Unlike older portable models that relied on replaceable AA batteries or separate charging packs, the Nano includes an internal rechargeable battery.

Early reports earlier this year suggested a very thin status display might appear on the device, but the final retail product omits such a screen and instead focuses on core functionality. Microsoft also added a programmable Action Button that users can remap for tasks such as taking screenshots, recording gameplay clips or other custom shortcuts.
Preorders are open now, with the first shipments scheduled to arrive from Aban. The controller starts at $49.99.
