FATF launches focused supervision of major crypto jurisdictions
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has announced a targeted supervisory initiative aimed at closing regulatory gaps around digital assets. The global watchdog will concentrate oversight on jurisdictions that host materially significant volumes of virtual asset transactions and Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs).
Why the move matters for crypto regulation and AML
The goal of the program is to narrow the divide between written laws and the practical application of anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing standards in the cryptocurrency industry. FATF inspectors will prioritize countries with substantial VASP activity to ensure consistent Travel Rule implementation and stronger transaction transparency.
Assessment timeline and reporting
FATF said preliminary assessment results will be published in 2027, with follow-up reports released in October 2027 (Mehr and Aban 1406 in the Persian calendar). The initiative emphasizes more rigorous supervision, faster reporting mechanisms, and periodic reviews to better track governments’ progress in remediating deficiencies.

Scope, confidentiality, and enforcement gaps
Regulators have not disclosed which countries or how many jurisdictions will be reviewed. Official FATF data shows that 55 out of 91 countries subject to the Travel Rule still lack effective supervisory or enforcement measures to ensure VASPs comply with data-sharing obligations for senders and recipients.
Practical challenges for national authorities
Domestic agencies continue to face significant challenges identifying unauthorized crypto operators and monitoring foreign service providers targeting local users. The Travel Rule requires crypto firms to share originator and beneficiary information for covered transfers, but implementation and cross-border enforcement remain uneven.
This increased scrutiny signals that global crypto compliance, robust Travel Rule adherence, and strong VASP supervision will be central to the next wave of AML enforcement and regulatory alignment.
