Bitcoin mining difficulty stays below its all-time high for 374 days

Bitcoin's mining difficulty has remained below its historic peak for 374 consecutive days, marking the longest such stretch in the network's history. Blockchain analytics from Mempool.space indicate a likely ~3.7% drop in the next difficulty adjustment around November 13, a shift that would push a new record further into the future.

How difficulty is measured and recent milestones

Mining difficulty measures how hard it is to find a new Bitcoin block. The protocol retargets difficulty roughly every two weeks to keep average block times near 10 minutes. The metric reached an all-time high of 155.97 trillion at block 921,312 on October 29, 2025, and has not returned to that level since.

Historically, long gaps between peaks have occurred before: the interval between the 2011 high and the next peak in July 2012 was about 364 days, while the China mining ban in 2021 produced a roughly 253-day gap until the subsequent high.

Hashrate recovery and recent difficulty movements

After a sharp 10.09% contraction in mid-June 2026 that sent difficulty down to 124.93 trillion — roughly 20% below the peak — the network saw partial recovery. Difficulty climbed 5.92% on October 16 and a further 5.54% on October 29, reaching 148.36 trillion, still about 4.9% short of the record.

Seven-day average hashrate also returned above 1 zettahash per second (ZH/s) in late October after nearly eight months beneath that threshold. Despite the hashrate rebound, Mempool.space's forecast for a reduction in the next retarget implies a longer road back to a new difficulty peak.

What this means for miners and Bitcoin price

A decline in mining difficulty can ease operational pressure on miners by lowering the energy and computational cost required to secure blocks. However, difficulty moves alone are not a reliable indicator of Bitcoin price direction. Market participants should not treat a single difficulty adjustment as a definitive buy or sell signal.

Guidance for investors and traders

Investors are advised to consider mining difficulty alongside broader metrics — price action, capital flows, macroeconomic conditions, and on-chain indicators — and to maintain disciplined risk management. While difficulty and hashrate influence miner economics and supply-side dynamics, meaningful price moves usually reflect a combination of demand, investor sentiment, and macro factors.

In short, the prolonged period below the 2025 difficulty peak highlights shifting miner dynamics and network resilience, but it should be weighed as one part of a comprehensive analysis of Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market.
