WhatsApp launches Message Translations for Android and iPhone users

WhatsApp has introduced a new Message Translations feature that lets users translate text messages directly inside chats. The tool works across one-to-one conversations, group chats, and Channels, making it easier to follow multilingual conversations without leaving the app.

How Message Translations works

When you encounter a message in a foreign language, simply long-press the message and choose the Translate option. You can then select the source or target language for the translation. For convenience, translations can be downloaded so the same language pair can be used later without repeated downloads.

On Android, WhatsApp adds an optional toggle to enable automatic translation for all future incoming messages within a specific chat thread. This means you can keep a continuous conversation flowing in your preferred language without manually translating each message.

Privacy: translations remain on-device

WhatsApp says all translations are performed locally on your device, so the translated text isn’t sent to WhatsApp’s servers. This on-device approach aims to preserve privacy while delivering quick translations during chats.

Rollout and language support

The Message Translations feature is rolling out to iPhone and Android users in select languages, with broader coverage planned over time. Android users will initially be able to translate messages in English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone users will receive support for more than 19 languages at launch.

The company intends to expand language options and availability in coming updates, improving accessibility for users across regions.

As messaging platforms compete to make communication seamless across languages, WhatsApp’s Message Translations brings a native, private translation option into everyday conversations.
