Ferrari unveils the SC40 — a one-off tribute
Ferrari's Special Projects division has revealed a new single-build supercar called the SC40. Based on the 296 GTB, this bespoke coachbuilt car is a modern, measured homage to the legendary 1987 F40 rather than a straight replica. The project reinterprets 1980s supercar aesthetics through contemporary engineering and materials.
Design inspired by the 1980s
Exterior details
The most striking feature is a tall, fixed vertical rear wing embossed with SC40 lettering — a direct visual nod to the F40's famed rear aero. The headlights sit low and widely spaced on the hood for a retro silhouette, while a smoked Lexan engine cover with heat-extract vents and a mesh rear deck improve cooling and add period flair. Triangular air intakes on the doors and fenders reference the original F40 air channels, but they’re interpreted in a modern key.

SC40 keeps the 296 GTB’s softer roofline and flowing fenders instead of copying the F40’s exact proportions. The nose carries a contemporary treatment with glossy black accents, and Ferrari opted out of the classic Rosso Corsa red in favor of a bespoke pearl white called Bianco SC40. The wheels are entirely modern and do not mimic the Speedline star pattern from the F40.
Interior and powertrain
Heritage touches inside
The cabin largely mirrors the 296 GTB layout but incorporates classic-inspired details: carbon-fiber flooring and dashboard, a textured red fabric trim and black suede upholstery that evoke the F40’s minimalist spirit while offering modern comfort.
Mechanically, Ferrari has not announced powertrain modifications. The SC40 uses the 296 GTB’s 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 plug-in hybrid system — the same setup rated at about 819 hp and 740 Nm — so performance is expected to stay in line with the donor car.

Positioning and collector appeal
This single-build is less about re-creating the past and more about balancing reverence with contemporary design language. It showcases Ferrari Special Projects’ ability to satisfy collectors who want history-inspired, unique cars without sacrificing modern technology.
Highlights:
- One-off coachbuilt model from Ferrari Special Projects
- Design cues: vertical rear wing, low-set headlights, triangular air intakes
- Based on 296 GTB with its 2.9L twin-turbo V6 hybrid system
- Bespoke Bianco SC40 paint and modern wheel design

Whether you view the SC40 as a tasteful tribute or a fresh reinterpretation, it underlines how legacy can be celebrated through contemporary supercar design rather than literal reproduction.
