Toyota and FAW unveil bZ3 Smart Home Edition

The Toyota-FAW joint venture has introduced an upgraded bZ3 electric sedan in China: the bZ3 Smart Home Edition. Focused on smart driving and connected features, this refreshed model brings lidar hardware and the Momenta 5.0 advanced driver-assistance system to the compact EV segment.

What’s new: hardware and software

Beyond subtle exterior tweaks, the headline change is the addition of a roof-mounted lidar sensor and a software leap to Momenta 5.0. Toyota’s updated front fascia adopts the brand’s latest design language with a full-width light bar, while hidden door handles and a cleaner taillight graphic keep the sedan’s silhouette modern and aerodynamic.

Momenta 5.0 is the technical heart of the Smart Home Edition. The ADAS suite combines 32 sensors with a high-performance chip offering roughly 544 TOPS of processing power, enabling more than 30 features such as automated urban and highway driving modes and remote parking. For drivers, that translates to a noticeably smarter driving experience compared with typical Level 2 systems.

Performance and range

Both Joy and Pro trims use a single front-mounted electric motor driving the front wheels. Key powertrain facts:

  • Joy: up to 517 km range (WLTP-equivalent figure used for the Chinese market)
  • Pro: up to 616 km range
  • Fast charging: 30% to 80% in about 27 minutes

Inside, the cabin gets a larger 15.6-inch center display and an updated intelligent voice assistant, underlining the model’s shift toward in-car connectivity and smart-home integration.

Market positioning and outlook

The bZ3 Smart Home Edition builds on the bZ3’s established foothold in China — the model recorded more than 2,000 sales in November after its 2024 debut. By adding lidar and a stronger ADAS package, Toyota and FAW aim to compete more aggressively in the local EV market, where buyers increasingly value autonomy, safety technology, and software-driven features.

Highlights:

  • Lidar integration and Momenta 5.0 suite
  • Two trims balancing range and cost
  • Faster charging and a tech-forward cabin

For shoppers focused on advanced driver assistance and smart features in an affordable electric sedan, the bZ3 Smart Home Edition is a noteworthy new contender.
