Peugeot unveils a sharper 408 at Brussels 2026

Peugeot has given the 408 a mid-life refresh that pushes the model's visual identity toward a more aggressive, distinctive stance. Introduced at the Brussels Motor Show 2026, the facelifted 408 combines sharper exterior detailing, an illuminated brand signature, and expanded powertrain choices to better compete in the compact fastback segment.

Stronger face, signature lighting

The most dramatic updates are up front. The old daytime running lights have been replaced by a new triple 'lion paw' DRL motif first seen on the latest 308. A redesigned grille with crisper lines and slim LED strips visually widens the car, while Peugeot's badge is now illuminated within the grille for the first time. At the rear, illuminated Peugeot typography stretches across the full-width light bar for a unified, modern look.

To keep attention on the DRLs, the primary headlamps are slimmer and tucked into the blacked-out lower bumper areas. The vehicle radar is hidden discreetly behind the front logo, maintaining a clean frontal surface. Peugeot also introduced a new chameleon green paint that shifts from deep green to bright yellow-green depending on light and angle, giving the 408 a fresh, attention-grabbing presence.

Interior upgrades: familiar layout, higher-quality finishes

Inside, the cabin remains recognizably 408, but materials and detailing have been upgraded. A new 10-inch driver display brings updated graphics. Higher trim levels gain genuine aluminum, Nappa leather, and Alcantara, a move designed to make the interior feel closer to premium rivals and to project a more upscale seating experience.

"Peugeot's goal is clear: make the 408 feel like a pricier car when you're sitting in it," said one company representative at the show.

Powertrains and driving range

Peugeot offers three distinct drivetrain choices to cover a wide buyer base: mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and a fully electric E-408.

  • Base mild-hybrid: a 1.2-liter three-cylinder plus a small electric motor integrated into a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox, producing 145 hp. It lowers fuel consumption and allows significant electric-only driving in urban use.
  • Plug-in hybrid: a 1.6-liter petrol engine paired with a stronger electric motor for a combined 240 hp. The 14.6 kWh battery enables roughly 85 km of electric-only range, ideal for daily commutes.
  • All-electric E-408: equipped with a 58.2 kWh battery and improved aerodynamics, the E-408 reaches about 455 km on a single charge under WLTP. Fast charging from 10 to 80 percent takes approximately 30 minutes.

Market position and verdict

This facelift positions the 408 as a more visually assertive and technologically complete option in its class. With updated styling, an illuminated brand identity, and a broad powertrain lineup from mild-hybrid to full electric, Peugeot is aiming to broaden the 408s appeal — from buyers seeking efficiency to those who want an electrified long-range option.

Highlights:

  • New triple-lion DRL and illuminated badge
  • Upgraded interior materials and 10-inch driver display
  • Three powertrains: mild-hybrid, PHEV (240 hp), and E-408 (455 km)

Whether you value design, fuel economy, or electric range, the refreshed Peugeot 408 offers stronger arguments than before for buyers in the compact fastback market.
