AMD Nearly Halves Steam CPU Market — Intel on Notice

AMD is no longer just nibbling at Intel's lead on Steam — it's sprinting. The latest Steam hardware survey for 2026 shows AMD processors at a record 44.97% of reported installations, up from a stall around 44% in March and April and climbing sharply in the past two months.

The engine behind that surge is Ryzen X3D. Short, powerful bursts of innovation — one generation after another — have given AMD a string of gaming-focused wins. New entries like the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Zen 5-based chips are moving off shelves fast, while older models such as the Ryzen 7 7700X3D and the ten-year special of the 5800X3D have been kept relevant with strategic refreshes.

Gamers vote with their wallets. So much so that global retail bestseller lists for CPUs are currently dominated by AMD; some big retailers' top-ten lists no longer show an Intel part at all. Even non-X3D Ryzen models are selling strongly, helping the company turn that market momentum into real revenue.

AMD now sits at 44.97% of Steam's CPU installs — its highest mark yet.

But this isn't a coronation. Intel still holds roughly 55% of the Steam CPU market and remains the platform's de facto default. That gap is meaningful. It will take more than a few blockbuster launches for AMD to overturn the incumbent on every front.

So where does this rivalry head next? Analysts are watching Intel's Nova Lake architecture, expected in late 2026, as the likely turning point. If Nova Lake delivers substantial gaming performance gains, Intel could blunt AMD's momentum and reclaim territory. If it doesn't, AMD's steady climb could become a rout.

Either way, the next few quarters promise to be far from boring for PC builders and gamers — and the best chips will win the most fans.
