Apple's Most Advanced On-Device AI Limited to Flagships

Apple’s top on-device AI will run only on devices with at least 12GB unified memory. iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone Air, M4 iPads, M3 Macs and Vision Pro (M5) qualify; iOS 27 launches the features.

Not every iPhone will get to talk with Apple’s newest, most expressive Siri. That’s by design.

Apple has made it clear: its most powerful on-device AI model needs serious memory to run. The model requires at least 12GB of unified memory. Short on RAM? You won’t see the upgraded voices, richer dictation, or several other Apple Intelligence features that depend on that model.

Which hardware makes the cut? On the phone side, only the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and the iPhone Air (all shipping with 12GB) will support these top-tier capabilities. The standard iPhone 17, with 8GB, is excluded. For iPad, the rule is chip and memory: M4 or newer plus 12GB of unified memory. Macs need an M3 chip or later and at least 12GB of RAM. Even the Vision Pro joins the list, with M5-equipped units qualifying for the advanced features.

Why the strict cutoff? Two reasons, really. First, the model is large and hungry for fast, shared memory—so devices without ample unified RAM simply can’t run it locally without affecting performance. Second, Apple’s emphasis on on-device processing aims to keep latency low and privacy high; that requires local muscle rather than cloud cycles.

This isn’t just about bragging rights for silicon. The 12GB threshold shapes which users get the most fluid, offline AI experiences: more natural Siri responses, context-aware dictation that holds a longer thread of conversation, and other Apple Intelligence tricks that rely on sustained on-device compute. Developers and users should expect a clear divide between the premium devices that deliver these experiences and the broader installed base that will get lighter-weight features instead.

All of the new Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features tied to this model will arrive with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate later this year. If you care about next‑gen, private, low-latency AI on your device, check your model’s chip and unified memory before upgrading.

Apple has set a high bar for on-device AI—one that rewards recent hardware and nudges the rest of the ecosystem to follow. Will that accelerate upgrades? Time will tell.
