Half a billion users already. You read that right: Threads has quietly crossed the 500 million monthly active users threshold, marking a major milestone as the app approaches its third birthday.
The pace of growth has been startling from day one. When Threads launched in 2023 it rocketed past 100 million accounts faster than many expected — even outpacing early adoption records set by ChatGPT. That early momentum has translated into sustained expansion, and Meta now says daily engagement is climbing across the globe.
So what’s driving this pickup? Communities — the groups where people gather around hobbies, niche interests, and local conversations — have become a backbone for the app. Meta moved Communities out of testing and gave them a prominent, visually distinct home inside Threads. The result: more focused conversations, stronger retention, and a growing catalogue of subject-based hubs. There are already more than 200 active communities, and Threads’ head, Connor Hayes, hints that tools to let users build private, personal communities could arrive next year.

Product changes aren’t limited to social features. Meta also introduced a control called Your Algo, a privacy-focused tool that lets users give the platform private feedback on how their feed is ranked. Think of it as a way to nudge the algorithm without broadcasting your preferences to the world. The feature is rolling out now in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
Mark Zuckerberg has publicly set a one-billion-user target for Threads. After clearing the 500 million mark, that goal suddenly feels less aspirational and more tactical. The combination of community features and user-level algorithm controls suggests Meta is trying to balance discoverability with personal relevance — a tricky trade-off most social apps wrestle with.
Hitting 500 million monthly users signals that Threads is no longer an experiment — it’s a mainstream social platform reshaping how people gather online.
Will growth keep accelerating toward a billion? Time and product bets will tell, but for now Threads is proving it can scale — and keep people talking.
